Donkey Kong's new design is perfect. Nope, we're not changing our stance here, and Donkey Kong Bananza solidified it even more.
A new 3D Mario isn't here to usher in a new generation of platformers for the new console, but we have plenty of fuzzy monkeys and apes to keep us company over the summer months as we bask in the Switch 2 glow. Donkey Kong Bananza is a new direction for the tie-wearing simian, and we got to spend 20 minutes running around the Ingot Mines and surrounding areas.
This is the silliest DK has ever gotten, and the wide-eyed new design is really just the start of it. Given just what you get up to in Bananza, the old style might not have worked well here. DK might have been destructive before, but has he ever punched a hole through multiple layers of a mining mountain?
Well, now you can, and that's exactly what we did. Twice, even. Donkey Kong Bananza lets DK go absolutely bananas in the sense that so much is destructible. DK can punch, uppercut, slam, and even beat on the ground to break rocks, walls, gold, sediment — many different hard materials basically — to collect gold nuggets, coins, and Golden Bananas. Yes, he does say, "Oh, banana!" And while the Bananza will guide you towards your goal with a handy little star icon, you can completely ignore it and punch anything and everything in your sight.

It's the perfect stress relief after a long day, hammering at walls with Donkey Kong and digging up secrets and treasures throughout the mines. And given how you can essentially rip your way through levels at multiple instances, it's amazing just how well the game holds up visually.
The stitches on DK's tie and his overalls are clearly visible, and his fur has never looked so soft and glossy. It all ties that goofy new design together, complete with that new level of personality that Nintendo seems to have injected into its modern platformers à la Mario Wonder.

The inside of the mines perhaps aren't as joyful as DK himself — though little Easter eggs like red girders and scaffolding, a little reference to his arcade debut add splashes of colour — but those rocky walls hide tons of interactable things. Donkey Kong can climb on certain walls simply by walking up to them — the ones we tried were a bit clunky, with flat stalagmites blocking our progression, but we still let out a little yelp of joy as we suddenly found ourselves clinging to a wall we'd uncovered behind some dirt.
'Secrets' seems to be the key word here, and almost everything is interactable. We might have accidentally punched a little Diddy-like dude or three inside the mines themselves, but it's just too fun not to throw hands absolutely everywhere. That can make it hard to keep track of those gold nuggets and other collectibles, but luckily, you can just slap DK's palms to the ground and collect everything around him all in one fell swoop.

In reality, Donkey Kong Bananza feels like it takes many cues from Super Mario Odyssey, from the interactivity with the environments and NPCs all the way down to the movement. Donkey Kong is so nimble and fluid that he might put his one-time rival and Cappy to shame. In addition to rock boarding, DK can roll at incredibly high speeds, tumbling through enemies and terrain like they're feathers. And he can even slide up half-pipes while balled up.
Everything DK uses to destroy the terrain applies in combat, too, which might make it seem a little simplistic, but there's one ability we haven't talked about yet that the first member of the DK crew has; he's able to lift entire slabs of rocks or boulders out from the ground and throw them, and that comes into play when you leave the mountain.
By holding down the 'ZR' button, Donkey Kong can literally rip a piece of the earth out of the ground or wall and put it on his back. He can also pick up normal boulders, too, but where's the fun in that? We want to tear the ground asunder and throw the earth at the enemies.
At first, it's fun to do it with just the sun-drenched rocky pathways, but eventually, you can extract some magma-looking rocks which act as bombs when you throw them at anything. And like your other methods, this can break up a lot of matter — walks, floors, and even materials DK can't break on his own will shatter and disperse to make way for more exploration.

If you ever cause too much damage and can't reach certain things, however, you can reset/rebuild all of your destruction at the touch of a button on the map screen — and an incredibly detailed, fully-3D map, too. It'll reload your last quicksave, meaning you can essentially change the way you break the boundaries of each environment.
While Donkey Kong has been living on the sidelines for a while now, Bananza truly is his time to shine, and what we got to play around with was a solid and delightfully stress-relieving bolt of silliness that we desperately need right now. We're hoping there are some more jungly levels out in the wilderness, but this could well be DK's breakout game. And he more than deserves it.

Everything DK64 should've been.
I’d get this over MKW.
@batmanbud2 On an N64? lol
After I watched the demo gameplay from Treehouse, I noticed the game have something remind me from Snow White reference. .
Donkey Kong whistling = Whistle While You Work
The mines with gems = Heigh Ho
@Anti-Matter lol ok.
@Scoopz Of course. Why else would they include the expansion pack? 🤪
It looks really good, and I've been excited to have a new DK game, so it doesn't disappoint
I'll definitely be picking this one up at some point, but oh boy is my wallet gonna be hurting
Sounds like a capital D capital K Donkey Kong game and I'm all for that. Pummelling through terrain with that kinda muscle is much more fitting for a big, hulking ape than collectathon precision platforming. We can leave that to the plumber.
Sounds and looks like real fun. It’s the only Switch 2 game I’m pretty excited about, and reading this more about the gameplay makes me even more excited. Sounds like it’s the best comeback for DK!
We've got Donkey Kong, Mario Kart and Metroid Prime 4 as release games and people are still whining all over the web.
I'm at a loss how folk can even suggest this and MKW don't look next gen. The amount of expression in each game surpasses anything I've ever seen!
Looks great
@Anti-Matter welcome back
@Cia Almost like different people have different tastes and those things appealing to you doesn't mean they appeal to everyone.
@Lizuka that's all well and good as long as you're not being melodramatic over it, yeah?
This was a stellar surprise announcement, and the tech and graphics scream next gen. There is no way this game was running on the last switch. And the idea is so original and fun. I was excited about running around DK island in 3D or maybe swinging on some jungle vines with him, but I will absolutely take this. I don't like the price, but I will still be there day one. 🤷♂️
Man i am so in love with this game, cant wait!
DK’s gonna wreck it!
This game looks fantastically high-quality just like any 3D Mario. And it’s releasing so soon too!
Speedruns and movement of this game are going to be wild! It's almost like Super Mario meets Minecraft. DK has had an identity crisis for a while but it ends now!
@Cia Well, yeah, because I wanted to see a mustached man killing turtles again but instead we got a big monkey who punches stuff. Nintendo just isn’t the same.
FINALLY the rock breaking from totk without all the boring stuff in between
This looks to have all the big, dumb, beefy, joyously cartoonish physically of Jungle Beat and I couldn’t be happier.
Smashing! Just smashing!
If I’m not mistaken, that game was made by the team that went on to make Galaxy. I wonder if some of the same staff are working on this…
@NinChocolate I'd get this AND MarioKart World
Thanks for the Hands On, between this and the Treehouse footage I'm looking forward to this DK Odyssey (because yeah, that's clearly what this is at its core which is great in my opinion) even more than I already was - oh, banana!
Treehouse footage definitely could see the Mario Odyssey DNA in there, along with DKC and a sprinkling of Wario. Much more impressed now than after that chaotic trailer yesterday
"DK might have been destructive before, but has he ever punched a hole through multiple layers of a mining mountain?"
I mean, he punched the moon hard enough for it to fall out of orbit in DKCR. If anything, he was nerfed here.
After watching some of the tree house footage today my son and I really want this game now and are very excited for switch2, it looks really good. Praying it’s not going to cost the earth as he wants the camera, pro controller, this and MKW (and thats not going to happen anytime soon, as we have to eat to lol).
Man this looks like so much fun.
Bug Hunt (Noisia remix) vibes
It does look glorious. I do hope there are some areas in the game that evoke the kind of spooky atmosphere of the Rare DKC games. Creepy pirate ships and swamps, etc.
There were rumors about this game for at least two years. And they always said that it is under development by the EAD Tokyo team, which is responsible for 3D Mario.
Oh man this game is gonna be so good!
Everything they've shown on the Treehouse stream has looked great to me. I had no idea I wanted a Donkey Kong take on Mario Odyssey, but this looks like a lot of fun. I'm happy DK is getting some proper attention again, and it looks like this might neatly fill the void of the Odyssey sequel or DLC we never got.
@Cia We don’t know when Metroid will be released, only Mario Kart is there for launch day
Donkey kong is back and he is pissed!
The terraforming environment is so impressive. I'm legit excited for this game.
This is the one must-have game for me so far! (I've never been into Mario Kart, though I am interested to try this one.)
The way DK controls reminds me so much of Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction on Gamecube, and I love that so much. And the currently available footage makes it clear how enjoyable the game is going to be.
I will say...I'm slightly concerned about them completely moving on from the Rare history. Imagine having animal buddies or one of Funky's planes in a game this big. And also...it would be quite strange to just have Diddy Kong removed entirely.
While part of me does miss the King K. Rool and the Kremlings part of me is enjoying how Bananza is looking. I literally went “Banjo”? for a second during the trailer. While DK’s new design does make me miss his older Rare designs his new design gives a “Fresh”, charming, and even comical take on him. I’m truly loving how much more expressive DK is and I’m looking forward to getting a chance to hang out with him in Bananza. ☺️
It's DK time to shine!
Hopefully one day we'll get a crossover where we can play as Mario, Kirby and DK in the same game lol.
@Cia It is a pretty big MSRP for a handful of AAA games. That said, people will still buy the crap out of it, complaints, or not.
@N00BiSH Same. I always thought DK lacked a gameplay identity and felt too close to Mario, the Country games feel like a 2D Mario with heavier physics and a jungle coat of paint, and DK64 is kind of just Mario 64: DK Edition. And I did think leaning into DK's brutish strength was a good way to differentiate himself from Mario. And we're getting that here. I could almost feel like I could drop Mario into other DK games and he wouldn't feel too out of place, but I DEFINITELY cannot say that for this one. Does Mario look like someone that can rip entire chunks out of the level and throw them around? Hell no. Some of these exact mechanics aren't quite what I envisioned in a good way, but a game like this is exactly the kind of game I think DK needs to make a resurgence.
I’m just confused why he has pants
@stuie1234 DK Bananza isn't a launch title; it comes out on July 17th
I love how mostly destructible the environment is, seems like it’s the perfect unique hook to gameplay. Like how ink is to splatoon, or the mostly climbable environments in BotW/TotK.
Easily my favorite showing in the Direct.
I don’t get the hype. I watched the trailer. Meh. I watched a chunk of the Treehouse. Meh. All I kept seeing was DK smashing things. Looks like it could get old. 🤷🏾♂️ Once I realized what the trailer was about, I thought we’d see an epic looking 3D platformer. Something to take the place of a proper Odyssey sequel. Instead, I thought about that DS Mario game. The one with all the coins. Which I enjoyed. It’s the environment, being destroyed, that reminded me of that game.
I do love that this game put the main role spotlight solemnly on Donkey Kong himself and no one else (no guide, no side-kick). I like games where the main character could figure things out by himself and not had any guide from an annoying side character that kept tagging along.
Looks insanely good.
All I want to know is is David Wise doing the music?
